ON THE COVER ROCKSTAR DAMON KELLY
MAGIC IMAGE HOLLYWOOD MAGAZINE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY OF INTERVIEWING MUSICIAN AND ROCKSTAR DAMON KELLY! HE OPENED HIS HEART TO US AND TALKED ABOUT HIS CAREER AND PROJECTS; LET’S SEE WHAT HE IS ALL ABOUT…
MIHM-Tell us a little bit about you, where are you from and what inspired you to pursue a career in the music industry?
DK – I truly am the Nikki Sixx of 2017 cuz I’ve always had a vision of where I wanted to be musically. I grew up in a small town of 200 people and I can always remember since I was 3 years old always loving and wanting to be surrounded by music. It started with a weekend polka band that I would watch load their van on Friday and come back Sunday every weekend. I thought that was so cool how they’d go play music wherever and come home, I would wait all day to see them do that. Then of course I started listening to Waylon Jennings, Don Williams, Kenny Rogers, Bobby Vinton, Dave & Sugar, etc. and soaking in the art of music, from there it was just infectious with an undying thirst for musical knowledge from a plethora of artists around the world and different genres to find my true blood in arena rock n’ roll.
MIHM -You are a Singer/Songwriter/Composer/Producer, which one makes your heart beat faster?
DK – All of it! There truly isn’t enough hours in a day to accomplish everything I want to achieve, I honestly love the entire process of creating and delivering a piece of music to the world, right from the inspiration to the lightning bolt to create it to building it to dissecting refining retuning reworking it to laying down the tracks to mixing and producing to releasing, it’s like planting a crop, it all starts from a seed that ends up in your home as food. It’s truly exhilarating!
MIHM -You had a successful international album release “LOVE N’ REVENGE” at the famous Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, tell us about that.
DK – The famous Whiskey is a great place and great staff/patrons, it’s home to the biggest legends and icons, you can literally feel the nostalgia walking in. The Whiskey has held its reputation for good reason and will always be a home to us also. Live playing in general is something we truly love to do to interact with our audience and really show them a good time and become friends with all of them. Love N Revenge delivers the high energy rock n roll show to please every crowd but we also love to hang out and get to know our fans offstage as well. We always love meeting and playing for new people and expanding our global reach.
MIHM -You headlined and opening for the PSW Emmy Awards televised to over 20 million people, how was it?
DK – It was an incredible experience even to see the entire production of the show come together and always fun seeing old and new friends in the business. We played our third single off the new album “Can’t Save Me” and was a tremendous crowd and was even more exciting with the TV cameras on us! At the end of the day it’s about getting our message out to everybody on the planet and touching lives.
MIHM -You are great guitar player, how did you start playing guitar and who was your guitar hero at that time?
DK – I have had so many influences really since birth and playing and touring in the country scene with a major Nashville artist to touring and writing with the biggest rock legends I’ve soaked it all in and have in a sense honed my own style and sound because of all my experiences in life. I must say that my all-time favorite guitar hero’s that definitely molded me and my craft would be the 80s arena rock era with Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Poison, Firehouse, Warrant, Ozzy, Autograph, etc. Pure guitar driven arena rock at its finest.
MIHM – Define what success means to you?
DK – Success to me is truly making a difference in the world through the healing power and message through music. I have started a KARMA FOUNDATION to help sick kids and kids with wishes to bring a smile and a brighter day.
To me music has got to put a shiver down your spine or a tear in your eye giving you confidence or the strength to get through a difficult time or get to a better place. It’s about touching lives and giving the next person that extra breath that they needed.
MIHM – You have been on the road sharing the stage with Vince Neil, Bret Michaels, Queensryche, Tesla, Dokken, Firehouse, Jackyl, Y&T, Slaughter, LA Guns, etc. How was that experience like?
DK – It’s unexplainable to share the stage with the best of the best. It sounds cliché but they all were the posters on my wall as I was playing in front of my bedroom mirror with a strobe light on dreaming of the day to be on the big stage with the big boys. It’s a true inspiration to play with hang with write with and know all these great artists. Essentially we are all cut from the same cloth and I appreciate and respect all the great artists in the world and getting to perform with them.
MIHM -Who have been your biggest mentors in your career?
DK – Honestly my biggest mentors and inspirations are everybody I’ve ever worked with as I’ve soaked in and digested knowledge and experience from so many people throughout my career so it’s hard to pinpoint certain ones. For example I learned so much from the band’s I’ve played with back home in Canada to bands that were in the A Circuit above us to getting there then to touring with a major Nashville artist then to touring with the big dogs today, I’ve learnt and grown as an artist from each and every one of these experiences playing live and in studio. Right now I have to say my biggest inspirations and mentors are my entire team that I have the privilege of working with every day (in no particular order) John Lisi, Vic Rivera, Harry Hess, Greg Polcari, Raven Blakkwell, Tommy John, Kevin Hogg, Johny Shandruk, Michael Levine, John Domagall, Robert Raff, Jason Nunnelley and the list goes on. I could not do it without any of these guys and a whole list more.
MIHM -What other projects are you working on right now?
DK – Love N Revenge “KARMA” came out May 23/17, When we aren’t touring we are in studio recording the next album “Thickskin” to be released Feb 2018 during Grammy week in Los Angeles. We are also working on a clothing line for men women and children above and beyond our regular LNR Merchandise. I released a radio single and video worldwide for my Bowie tribute “FAME” Sept 13/17 and we are extremely excited for our next radio single/video “GET ME OUTTA THIS HOLE” hitting world waves early December 2017. Besides writing and producing for and with other artists.
I’m also proud to be a part of a new reality show “HOLLYWOOD HOUSEPARTY” working with Producer Rudy Marz and the rest of the cast and crew. LNR hits the road full time starting on Jan 19/18 in Detroit with multi-platinum selling Autograph and making our way across the USA hitting Michigan, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida, California, Hawaii, Europe and Japan, for starters! Festivals and shows with other major artists and LNR headlining are coming in all the time, and we can’t wait to rock them all!
MIHM -What would you be doing if you weren’t involved in show business?
DK – To me it’s always never been a compromise, I have done a lot of things in my life but I will not let anything or anyone stop me from being at the top and the goal is to always be at the top of my game and beyond and always strive to outdo myself in every way. Second is last and I have every intention on exceeding expectations.
